The quarterly meeting of the Lake Lawsona/Fern Creek Neighborhood Association was held on July 9. Orlando District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan briefed residents on plans by the Orlando Housing Authority to resettle renters of the Reeves Terrace Apartments while the 176 units of affordable housing are demolished and rebuilt.

We reviewed the challenges of disrupting the existing after-school programs for the many children living here and how relocating residents might impact their ability to use public transportation to get to jobs and other support services. As this community is part of the Lake Lawsona/Fern Creek Neighborhood, we are following this program closely and supporting efforts to phase in these changes to the community.

The 2020 Private Gardens of Orlando featuring the Lake Lawsona/Fern Creek Neighborhood was reviewed, and a preliminary date was selected for March 29, 2020. Current priorities include getting the 10 home gardens identified and obtaining corporate sponsors for the event. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity or community-improvement project.

Jeff Smith and Jeff DiCiero were elected as president and vice president of the neighborhood association for 2019-20. Efforts to expand communication with residents include regular newsletters and pushing information to both our Facebook group and our Nextdoor page. Register for our newsletter by visiting our web page at www.lawsonaferncreek.org.

The Association will be organizing a National Night Out Block Party for Oct. 1, 2019. We invite all residents to participate and to learn more about neighborhood safety and how to be involved in community activities.
