The Plaza Live will be revitalized in a big way thanks to a $10 million grant from the Orange County Board of Commissioners, according to a press release.

Plaza Live is a concert and event venue in the Milk District on 425 N. Bumby Ave. The building was constructed in 1963 and is currently owned by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. Ownership of the venue will be transferred to the City of Orlando, but the Philharmonic will continue to operate and maintain the facility. The Commissioners approved the funding today using tourist development tax dollars to fund the project.

“We look forward to capturing the nostalgia and preserving the history of The Plaza Live that existed decades ago, while infusing new technology and design of today as a part of the vision for the future of this unique and dynamic venue,” said Candy Crawford, president of the Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation Board of Directors, in the release.

The renovation of the Plaza Live began in 2013 when the Philharmonic bought the venue. The second phase of the renovation will be the transfer of ownership to the City. Now, using the $10 million granted by the county, the city will own the building and the Philharmonic will manage the venue.

“We look forward to enhancing the experience and utilization of The Plaza Live, which will provide increased financial support for the Philharmonic and is a part of our long-term sustainability plan and growth,” said Mary Palmer, president of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Board of Directors, in the release. “We are thankful for the outpouring of community support of the orchestra and venue and we look forward to sharing the completed project with the Central Florida community.”

Changes coming to the Plaza include maximizing capacity, increasing accessibility and increased guest services to patrons and artists. Little Diversified Architectural Consulting will serve as the project architect.
