Residents of Thornton Park may have been wondering why the Veranda building on Washington Street changed colors overnight.

It’s one step in the event venue’s plans to open an ice cream and deli shop in the downstairs portion of the building on 707 E Washington St. Felicia Vestal, the events, property and marketing manager at The Veranda at Thornton Park, said the paint color pays homage to a lesser-known fountain at Lake Eola Park: the Sperry Fountain.

Vestal said they hope to open the shop, which will be named Sperry Deli & Creamery, by the end of the year. There will be a walk-up window to order ice cream, and customers can come inside to browse the meats available. There will be no tables for seating.
